“The Fox” Old German Character Stein
E&R Golden Crown
10½ inches tall
I have collected beer steins and glasses for over 50 years. Now it is time to downsize a bit so here
is a neat figural beer stein depicting a fox with a walking stick and a bag with the results of his hunt. It is made of stoneware and is hand-painted
.
The German text appears to be a message to human fox hunters:
“
WAIDMANN LIEBER WAIDMANN SCHAU, DER FUCHS ALS J
Ä
GER IST AUCH SCHLAU”
Translation: HUNTSMAN DEAR HUNTSMAN LOOK, THE FOX AS HUNTER IS ALSO CUNNING
The stein is 10½ inches tall and has a width of 4¼ inches at the base.
The Ebeling & Reuss Co. (E&R) was an importer, not a manufacturer. E&R imported porcelain, earthenware and ironstone from 1900 to 2002
. This stein is marked “GERMANY” and the E&R shield with “Western Germany” was used in the 1950’s. The actual manufacturer and year made are unknown.
Condition:
The stein is in MINT condition. There are no flakes, flea bites, chips, hairlines, cracks or staining. Stoneware does not develop crazing. The 5-ring hinge and strap are tight and the lid sits correctly.
Markings:
The
model number “427” and “GERMANY” are impressed on the bottom.
Special Note:
The
E&R Shield has very old, very dry glue. It fell off after the photo session. I placed it in a glassine envelope which is now inside the stein.
