Description

29th President.  Typed letter signed
"Warren G. Harding"
AS PRESIDENT, one page, 7x9, The White House Washington stationery, May 21, 1923 on White House letterhead, to former Associate Justice of the Supreme Court William R. Day, in full:
I am writing to make acknowledgement of your letter of May 21st, tendering me your resignation of the position of Umpire of the Mixed Claims Commission of the United States and Germany.  I am sorry the Commission is not to have the benefit of your services, especially in view of the fact that your appointment was received with such unanimous approval.  However, your long career as a public servant entitles you to give first consideration to the conservation of your health.  I hope, with all my heart, that your entire freedom from official responsibilities will speed your restoration to vigorous health.
With renewed assurances of my highest regard and most cordial good wishes...
Light wear, central fold, soiled on verso, else fine.
Day served as a Supreme Court Justice for 19 years and, upon his retirement from the Court, briefly served as an Umpire of the Mixed Claims Commission to Adjudicate War Claims against Germany.  He would die on July 9, 1923.
Most uncommon association between President and Supreme Court Justice.
