daguerreotype
by Mathew Brady.
Calhoun is standing, resting his left hand on a group of congressional bills about states rights, free trade, strict construction on which he championed that are on a table holding his ink and quill pen along with the books of Thomas Jefferson, evidence of an educated and informed leader. The background is formed by a wall with a globe of the World and a 31 Star flag draped along side on a marble checkered floor.

MEZZOTINT ENGRAVED.
ENGRAVING  CONDITION IS FINE THROUGHOUT FOR ITS 169 YEARS WITH UNDER TRIMMING OF THE MARGIN AREA THAT CONTAINED THE COPYRIGHT LINES AND THE VICE PRESIDENTS NAME. SOME SMALL TEARS
AROUND THE EDGES HERE AND THERE , NONE REACHING ANY MORE THAN 1 3/4" IN FROM THE OUTER EDGES, NONE AFFECTING THE SUBJECT. (ONE TEAR ABOUT 2 3/4" AT THE TOP CENTER EDGE NOT AFFECTING THE SUBJECT EITHER). TWO SMALL AREAS OF CONSERVATION NEAR THE RIGHT AND LEFT EDGES HALF WAY UP (ONE ABOVE THE GLOBE AND ONE ABOVE THE BOOK). (please see pictures). NO FOLD LINES. SOME DAMP STAINS ON THE REVERSE NOT NOTICEABLE THE OBVERSE. ON THE REVERSE SOME HEAVY CLEAR TAPE CONSERVATION AT THE EDGES TO SLOW ANY FUTURE EDGE WEAR. COULD BE NICELY
MATTED AND FRAMED.
