Description
Exceptionally Rare and original, 1865 large size, Roll-Up / Wall Map style, Hand Colored Stone Lithograph Political Americana Broadside / Poster depicting President Andrew Johnson surrounded by portraits of members of his Cabinet and prominent Union Army and Navy Officers.Because Andrew Johnson never actually was a candidate for President of the United States, there is very few “Political Americana” / Presidential Campaign items featuring his image. There are no “Johnson for President items and only a handful of Political Americana items feature his portrait and the Poster offered here is considered one of the very few produced that featured Andrew Johnson and likely was issued in anticipation of his running for reelection.
The Poster / Broadside offered here is not only exceptionally rare but large in size, brightly hand colored and very impressive visually.
This fascinating, Stone Lithograph Roll-Up / Wall Map style Broadside / Poster is titled “The Guardians of Our Country” and it measures approx. 28 1/2” by 35 1/2” (sheet size). It is framed for display in a simple, ca1900, oak frame (overall size of framed display is 30” by 37”). It features a large, bust portrait of President Andrew Johnson at the center surrounded by smaller bust portraits of Civil War Union Navy Admirals Farragut and Porter; Union Army Generals Grant, Sherman, Hooker, Roscrans, Kilpatrick, Sigel, Meade, Thomas, Meagher, Logan, Burnside, and Terry. Also included are Secretary of War Edwin Stanton and Secretary of State William Seward. Each of the smaller portraits are each surrounded by a laurel wreath.
A long list of other the names of other Union Officers is included in two columns flanking Stanton and Seward. Each column of names is titled "The Roll of Honor". Between the portraits of Seward and Stanton there is an illustration of five men raising an American flag in celebration of victory. Among these is a soldier, a sailor, a politician, a farmer, and a slave.
Text on the Broadside below the portrait of Andrew Johnson reads: "Seventeenth President Andrew Johnson Born December 20, 1808" / "The Guardians of Our Country”. Additional text below reads: "The Star Spangled Banner in Triumph shall Wave; Over the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave".
The Sheet is copyright by the publisher - Haasis & Lubrecht of New York City. Besides the publisher’s mark and the copyright slug, the lower margin contains further text that reads “Agents wanted to sell this Chart and a great variety of other Charts & Maps”. Also listed are the names and addresses of agents for Haasis & Lubrecht in various cities including B.B. Russell & Co., Boston, Golden & Sammons, Chicago, W. Holt, San Francisco, and J. & D. Beatson, Cincinnati.
While we have handled scores of pre-Civil War, canvas backed Roll-Up Wall Maps and similar style Schoolhouse teaching pieces, we have never seen this Hand Colored Andrew Johnson Lithograph before and our research was able to uncover only three that have been offered for sale over the past 10 years.
This exceptionally rare and original, 1865 Andrew Johnson Political Americana Broadside / Poster is in very good condition and displays nicely as framed. The colors are bright and vibrant and there are no significant areas of loss or damage to the sheet. While we have not examined the Broadside out of the frame, it appears to be linen backed as issued and has some visible wrinkling to the surface and some tight tears that were likely repaired at the time the Poster was framed. There is some toning to the varnish as is typical with these types of Roll-Up Wall Map style display items as well as some scattered small spots of staining but no major large stains and no significant soiling to the surface. There are a few very small spots of paper loss in the left hand margin area only. Overall the Broadside is well preserved and is a very impressive display piece.
Should the buyer wish to have the Broadside cleaned and conserved, we will be happy to refer them to a highly regarded paper conservator who specializes in roll-up wall maps who should be able to return this important piece of Political Americana to near mint condition!!
An exceptionally rare and original, 1865 large size, Roll-Up / Wall Map style, Hand Colored Stone Lithograph Political Americana Broadside / Poster depicting President Andrew Johnson surrounded by portraits of members of his Cabinet and prominent Union Army and Navy Officers and a fantastic addition to any Political Americana / Presidential collection!!!
