    Description

For sale is an original letter hand-signed by the 12th Attorney-General of the US, Joseph Barnes.
Barnes is perhaps best known as being the doctor that attended Lincoln after his assassination, and helped nurse fellow assassination target, Secretary of State William Seward, back to health.
Signed letter was sent to Barnes' friend, prominent military surgeon Josiah Simpson, who served with Barnes in the Mexican-American War, and also served on several expedition missions in the West and in the Civil War. Fresh to the market from the estate of a descendent of Simpson.
Two-page letter has what appears to be a secretarial letter on the first page with a secrettarial signature for Barnes. Page two, however, has a message in Barnes' own hand with his personal signature. The letter introduces Simpson as a member of a legation visiting Paris in 1867. Included with the letter is a notice of Simpson's death in 1874, composed by Barnes, and found in the same estate of a descendent of Simpson that the letter was found in.
