Description
This is a VintageMatthias Girmscheid
German Stein designed by Anton Killian "Karl" Beuler #1185 called "Tavern keeper".
This Stein is in Overall Good
***Note - There is a Chip and a repair made to the lid. The Lid doesn't quit line up in front. There is also some crazing in places, with most obvious being inside. This is all shown in detail in the last 4 pictures.
The Stein is 13 1/4" tall to the top of the lid, 8 1/2" tall not measuring the lid. The Base is 4 1/4" in diameter. The brim is 3" in diameter. The Stein weighs 3 LBS 4 OZ.
The Bottom of the Stein is marked "Germany, 1185, 4". The side is stamped "KB" for Designer Karl Beuler.
The Stein reads, "Ein guter frischer Gerstensaft, die echte deutsche Arbeitskraft" which translates to "A good fresh beer, the real German strength". The figure on the lid is Gambrinus, "The King of Beer", and has long been a universal symbol of beer and brewing. It has been suggested that the character may be drawn from the claimed real life inventor of hopped malt beer, Jan Primus (Johann I), a 13th century Belgian Duke and
President
of the Brussels Guild of Brewers.
This Stein has good colors and great eye appeal.
