Description
15th President. Autograph document signed (ADS)"James Buchanan",
January 1, 1863, Lancaster, 7.5x5.5 lined paper, in full:
Agent of the State of Ohio, New York, Pay to the order of C. Hager Esquire, President of the Farmers Bank of Lancaster one hundred and fifty dollars, the interest due me this day on a certificate of Loan from said state for Five Thousand dollars. / 0.00
Two cent stamp at upper left on which Buchanan puts his initials and the date. There are some penned and stamped payment notations on the verso.
The Hager family was well known in Lancaster for many generations. Christopher was chosen president of the Farmers Bank of Lancaster in 1848 and served in that capacity for twenty years until his untimely death in 1868. There is an interesting link here in that Hager's father had sold a property to wealthy iron manufacturer Robert Coleman. Coleman had then sold the property to James Buchanan. Buchanan was engaged to his daughter, Ann, who eventually broke off their engagement and died shortly thereafter.
The date of this letter is, of course, significant in American history as it was the same day as the enactment of the Emancipation Proclamation.
