Castleton China DWIGHT EISENHOWER Birthday Plate 1953 - 1st Ed. VERY RARE - FIRST EDITION EISENHOWER BIRTHDAY PLATE! GIVEN BY THE REPUBLICAN FINANCE COMMITTEE - ONLY 6002 MADE! There are two editions of this plate which commemorates the birthday of President Eisenhower in 1953. The original plate that was given to the guests at the President's birthday party in Hershey, PA and has a keystone backstamp. That is the one that I have listed here . The other plate is a plate made to commemorate the original plate! This is the second edition plate and has a square backstamp. Both plates were made by Castleton China of New Castle, Pennsylvania. Both plates have identical fronts. The difference in the original and the second edition is in the wording and design of the backstamp.
This one says it was given by the Republican Finance Committee of Pennsylvania as a favor to all those present at the party held in Hershey, Pennsylvania. The date of the party was October 13, 1953. There is also a number 21 in gold on the back of the plate. From researching this plate, it seems that indicates the number of the edition, which would make this one #21/6002. There were 6000 guests and the President and Mrs Eisenhower each got a plate as well, so that made up the quantity of 6002. The plate is in very good condition. I do not see any chips or cracks but there are some utensil marks which have resulted in minor wear to the central design. On the back, the stamp and the writing are very clear. The date of this event was October 13, 1953 -1 rare "keystone version" commemorative plate - a complementary gift to all who attended the birthday party: This limited-edition dinner plate was made expressly to commemorate the Eisenhower party (in Hershey, PA), by Castleton China Co. of New Castle, PA. It features a vibrant Pennsylvania Dutch design, President Eisenhower's signature in gold paint, and wording about the president's birthday (10/14/53) and the party (10/13/53). It's referred to as a "12-inch dinner plate," though its actual diameter is about 10-13/16". This is one of the rare, original complementary plates, with the "keystone" backstamp, which states that the recipient was physically in attendance at the party. Later "runs" of the same plate can be seen for sale on eBay -- with a different backstamp. Those plates were made available for sale, in quantity, to persons who did not attend the party and, of course, they are not rare like this one.
