Antique Mettlach Beer Stein“Barmaid with Stein”
* * * Designed by Heinrich Schlitt * * *
Mold #2181 Decoration #957
I have collected beer steins and glasses for over 50 years. Now it is time to downsize a bit and this is a duplicate, an extra. It is a MINT condition antique Mettlach beer stein designed by Heinrich Schlitt, possibly the most famous of the Mettlach artists.
The stein is a PUG (Print Under Glaze) showing a barmaid with a very large stein.
The pewter lid is tiered and the thumb lift has the Munich Child.
The stein is
¼ liter
capacity and
6½ inches
tall overall (almost
5 inches
to the rim).
Condition:
The stein is in MINT condition. There are no flakes, flea bites, chips, hairlines or cracks and no crazing! I find no flaws in the decoration. The inside is white with no stains. The tiered pewter lid has no dents or dings. It sits properly and the 5-ring hinge and strap are tight. There is one factory flaw, a tiny popped bubble on the left side at the base of the bottom rim (Photo #3).
Markings:
The bottom of the stein has the standard Mettlach markings. The following are impressed: the mold number (2181), quality control number (31) and the year code (99 for 1899).
The green Mercury mark, the decoration number (957) and “GESCHUTZT” (protected) are stamped on the bottom in black along with the hand-written decorator number (15) and an inspection mark (“%”).
