    Description

The stein depicted in this auction was made by the Villeroy & Boch firm from the town of Mettlach. The stein is pottery, etched and the size is 1/2 L.  The name of the piece is "French Cards" and has the form number 1395
.  The stein has a inlaid lid with a very nice pewter thumb.  The stein was made in 1894, that makes the stein about 127 years old wow.  The stein has the incised Abbey mark and the green Mercury mark which is barely visible.  Among the most well-known and highly regarded manufacturers from the “golden age” of German beer stein production in the late 19th and early 20th centuries is the Villeroy & Boch factory at Mettlach. Located on the grounds of a former Benedictine abbey on the Saar river in southwest Germany, the factory was originally established in 1809 by Johann Franz Boch-Buschmann, who merged with competitor Nicholas Villeroy in 1836 to create the firm of Villeroy & Boch.
