Description
This is an antique mid 19th century print titled WASHINGTON FAMILY. It is in its original 1860s frame. The overall frame measures 14 inches high x 12 inches wide (35.5 cm x 30.5 cm). The mat measures 10 inches x 8 inches (25.4 cm x 20.3 cm). The print measures 9 1/4 inches x 7 1/8 inches (23.5 cm x 18.1 cm).
The print is attached to the mat.
I did some preliminary research, and found that this is either a mezzotint or steel engraving.
On the bottom, it reads:
WASHINGTON FAMILY
Published by Moore & Goodspeed, 37 Park Row, New York.
Martha Washington is sitting on the left, Martha (Patsy) Parker Custis is standing next to her, George Washington is sitting on a chair with his sword on the table, and John (Jacky) Parker Custis is standing next to him with his hand on the globe.
The children were Martha Washington’s from a previous marriage. Her husband passed away.
There is a scattered white film on much of the print. However, it may just be on the glass. I’m not quite sure. This tends to stand out more at different angles. There is probably overall foxing, due to the backing.
The frame has age related wear, including losses to the surface, nicks and hairline cracks. It is still very solid though. It has its original very bubbled and wavy glass.
It weighs 1 pound 10 1/2 ounces (752 g).
