Presented is a beautiful glass beer stein made in a style that is called "Mary Gregory type". It's a small 0.25 L stein sometimes called "children's or women's stein" - there were actually beer steins in Germany created specifically for children.
There are many speculations as for who Mary Gregory was. It is known that she worked for Sandwich Glass factory in 1880. It is not known if she ever painted children. However, the name "Mary Gregory" is referred to the glass with white enamel paintings of children.
This stein is German and it was made in 1870s - some 10 years before Mary Gregory started working in the United States. The technique originated in Germany - the American implementation of it is secondary.
The picture is painted with white enamel using several different layers forming shades and even relief giving a fantastic impression. It shows a young boy very nicely painted waving a tree- or flower branch.
The stein is made of bownish-green (bottle-green) hand blown glass with applied handle and very thin pewter with light blue milk glass inlay - very typical for 1870s glass steins  - it was a common thing in the early 1870s when pewter became very expensive because of the Franco-Prussian war.
The stein is in good condition, with excellent body and a missing tip of the thumblift.
it is 5.5" tall to the top of the (remains of) thumblift, 0.25 L capacity.
