Antique German Westerwald Etched/Incised Stoneware Beer Stein Birnkrug c.1790
Description:
The stein presented was made around the late 1700s - about 1780 -  1790s. It is a very traditional type of serving beer steins or "master steins" with bulbous form called "Birnkrug" or "pear-shaped steins".
The stein is made of saltglazed stoneware decorated with a beautiful etched and incised into the body floral patterns. This was done with several kinds of wooden sticks when the clay was still soft. It is also glazed with cobalt
-blue glaze
The lid is pewter with hollow ball thumblift. This form of thumblift was most common throughout the 1700s. Large five-ring closed hinge connected to the lip ring - great excellent quality pewter work. The lid is engraved with initials "M.S.". The stein is in excellent condition - there are no chips, cracks or repairs. There are some impurities and minor manufacturing glitches: glaze spills, etc. - it's a little rough pre-industrial production. But no damage or repairs. This is actually quite a rare occurance - the conditions like this in 200 + year old beer stein are scarce.
Excellent appearance overall. It is 10.5" to the top of the thumblift, about 1 L capacity.
