Antique Early Pewter German Beer Stein South Germany Wedding Theme c. 1840Description:
This antique pewter beer stein was made in Germany around 1840 - give or take 5 years. The stein is a very classical beer vessel made in late Biedermeier period of middle of the 19th century.
Slightly tapered squat form with relief bands imitating a wooden beer keg and stamped floral decorations. Nice lid with a hunting themed medallion and decorative thumblift in form of two kissing doves - typical late Biedermeier. This type of pewter steins, made of thick pewter with relief bands are attributed with Nuremberg and South of Germany. The barrel-shaped ones were usually made in Regensburg - a town very close to Nuremberg.
The "kissing doves" thumblift was very popular - beer steins with this thumblift were made of glass, pewter, stoneware, faience - and used for wedding gifts or sometimes as a symbol of romantic friendship.
The stein is marked on the inside with the pewter quality mark:
"Probzin Zum Zehten" - that means that pewter was made of 9 parts of tin and 1 part of lead.
Excellent example of just pre-industrial beer stein production. Excellent for the age condition with some very minor wear. There is some minimal patination - the 9 part tin and 1 lead is a good combination and the stein was most likely kept in some clean closed environment..
Please note this is not a stein in "style" of 1840s, this is a real beer vessel from the mid-19th century. I guarantee my description and dating. It is 6.5" tall to the top of the thumblift, 0.5L capacity.
