Early German Faience Beer Stein Hannover-Muenden Horse c.1790sDescription:
Antique German beer steins from before 1850 is a very specific category called "Early". They are rare, highly collectable and include beer drinking vessels from as far as the 16th century to the first half of the 19th. These are the production samples from pre-industrial era - made by hand with the help of simple machinery.
Presented is an early faience beer stein from Hannover-Muenden area. This was a very large faience producing area in 1700s - early 1800s. It is well known for the most common decoration motive - a jumping horse.
The majority of horse-decorated faience steins from the 1700s and early 1800s comes from this factory.
The stein is in a very good condition for the age. There are several tight hairlines and some minor restoration on the upper rim. No major breaks, no chips, the painting is all original. There is a decorator's monogram on the bottom - it's even more interesting that not all the steins were signed or marked.
It is 9" tall, approx. 1L capacity. This is a historical beer drinking vessel over 200 years old. It has some repairs but displays nicely - a great window piece. I guarantee my description and dating!
