    Antique Blown Cut Glass German Beer Stein - Student Associations Zofingia Geneva dated 1881
    Description:
    This antique German beer stein was made in 1881 of hand-blow glass with stone-cut facets for optical effects.
    The lid is pewter with beautiful hand-painted porcelain inlay showing three Coat-of-Arms that are usually associated with student societies. The inscription underneath the Coat-of-Arms states:
    "Post tenebras lux" - "Light after darkness" - on the left, the motto of the University of Geneva, Switzerland.
    "Zofingia seis Panier!" - "Zofingia is our banner!" in the middle - the motto of the Zofinga Student Association.
    "Dieu et mon droit" - "God and my right" - the motto of the United Kingdom outside of Scotland on the right.
    In other words, the Coat-of-Arms on the left is the CoA of the University of Geneva, The one in the middle is the CoA of the Student Society of Zofingia, and the one on the right is the CoA of the United Kingdom (iwithout Scotland).
    Most likely, the recipient of the stein was a British student of the University of Geneva and a member of Zofingia fraternity, named after the Celtic people populated the Swiss area in ancient times..
    The lid is also engraved with a presentation inscription that shows several names of the students who were participating in the present. The inside of the lid shows a presentation inscription in French and the signature of the artist - C.Hahn u. Sohn Jena - a well known decorator's firm in Jena, Germany.
    .
    The thumblift is made in the form of an eagle.
    The stein is in good condition -there are is a small flake on the base of the stein (see pic.), otherwise excellent.
    The stein is 7" tall to the top of the thumblift, 0.5L capacity.
