As a WW II veteran, President Kennedy was qualified for a plot at Arlington National Cemetery, also deserving of a special site befitting his presidential status. Ironically, the spring before he died, President Kennedy made an tour of Arlington National Cemetery and commented on the wonderful view of the Potomac River from the Curtis-Lee Mansion, stating it was "so magnificent I could stay forever." Having been told of her husband's comment, the president's widow, Jackie Kennedy, who was responsible for the final decision, toured the site on November 24th and agreed, stating, "He belongs to the people". The graveside military ceremony was conducted there the following day, November 25th, when these pictures were taken.
With the Kennedy family and Arlington officials agreeing, on March 14, 1967 President Kennedy's grave was officially moved a few feet from its original site where a safer and more stable eternal flame was constructed, also to better accommodate the heavy volume of tourists visiting the grave site. In 1968 the bodies of the Kennedy's two children who died at birth were moved to the new grave site from their graves in Massachusetts. Also in 1968, Senator Robert F. Kennedy, the assassinated brother of the president, was buried at the site. When Jackie Kennedy died of cancer in 1994 she was laid to rest next to her presidential husband. Senator Ted Kennedy was also laid to rest next to his two brothers after his death in 2009.
Interestingly, although numerous past presidents were also veterans entitled to burial at Arlington National Cemetery, only one other U.S. president is interred at Arlington Cemetery, William Taft who died in 1930.
