Print, entitled JAMES K. POLK. FREEDOM'S CHAMPION., celebrating President James Polk and the signing of the Oregon Treaty, 1846. Color-tinted lithograph. Sarony & Major, New York. Housed in original lacquered wood frame with hand-blown glass. Size refers to overall dimensions. Depicts the 11th president holding a quill pen and sitting at a table on which rests the Oregon Treaty, represented by a scroll inscribed, OREGON, and the northern boundary negotiated with Great Britain.
The Oregon Treaty between the United Kingdom and the United States was signed on June 15, 1846, in Washington. The treaty brought an end to the Oregon boundary dispute by settling competing American and British claims to the Oregon Country.
A rare and striking print we have not previously seen.
